维新派发动东南亚华商通电“勤王”,是海外侨胞在历史上第一次关心国内政治的重要活动。维新派在海外宣传,兴学办报,促进了海外侨胞的民族觉醒。但是,资产阶级改良派后来沦为保皇派,站在革命派的对立面,它不可能把华侨引上正确的道路。进一步启发华侨的民族主义觉悟的任务,历史地落在中国同盟会的身上。

Overseas Chinese Businessmen''''s Campaign of "Saving the Emperor" in Southeast Asia during 1899-1900

In the late 19th century,the Reformists launched a campaign of Saving the Emperor by encouraging the Chinese businessmen in Southeast Asia to send telegraphs to the Empress Dowager.This was the first important political activity in which overseas Chinese were concerned about China's domestic politics.The Reformists evoked the national awakening of the overseas Chinese through the efforts of propaganda,opening schools and running newspapers.However,the Reformists eventually became royalists who opposed revolution in China.Then it was up to the revolutionaries,China's United League,to further strengthen the nationalist consciousness of overseas Chinese and led them to the revolutionary path.
