Towards Red Pine and His Complete Translation of Cold Mountain Poems

It is known that a different academic background, varied life experiences and translation policies, to a larger extent, determines a translator＇ s principle of choice of texts to be translated and his translation strategies. The Collected Songs of Cold Mountain in 1983, which is translated by Red Pine, is the first complete translation of Cold Mountain Poems in western world. The meticulous textual research, prose-like translation strategy and delicate textual annotation of this complete translation have laid a solid foundation for the dissemination and reception of Cold Mountain Poems in English world. The peripheral poet, Han Shan and his poems have thus become much filtering and worldwide in the fields of Sinology, comparative literature and translation studies.
