The Pitfalls of Ethnicity and Ethnic Conflict

Ethnic conflict is defined as the extension of social and political confrontation between contenders who define themselves and the others in ethnic terms. Ethnic identities include not only objective attributes but also subjective feelings and beliefs which contribute to ethnic coercion and sometimes even create and construct these attributes. Conflict does not arise naturally because of the differences of groups of people but because of special meanings attached to these differences.
