Trade and the Environment: the British Columbian Timber Trade Example

Institution:Mark J. Spalding, J.D., M.P.I.A., of Del Mar, California, USA, is a writer, consultant and attorney on international environmental policy and law. In 1993, as a volunteer consulting attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council's (NRDC) International Program, he actively participated in the negotiations and drafting of the NAFTA environmental side agreement, as well as the debates related to the environmental impacts of the NAFTA itself. Specifically, he was involved in the creation of provisions for citizen input and citizens submissions to the Secretariat created by the NAAEC. He is currently the Chair of the California State Bar Environmental Law Section's International Environmental Law Committee. This article was originally prepared as a paper for the NRDC's International Program.
