Trial by the Oath God in Batavia's Tribunal

God's Swear and Judge is one kind of trial by the god and is used to settle conflicts and disputes among people. It was introduced to the Chinese community in Batavia with the Chinese immigration to Southeast Asia and adopted as a legal method in Batavia's tribunal in 18 and 19 centuries. Many cases about it are included in the first volume of Legal Cases in Batavia Tribunal File Collection. This article explores the reasons why it existed from the belief of Overseas Chinese in Batavia, the policy of Dutch colonial government and the influence from China and analyzes its characteristic and effects from the cases included in the Legal Cases.
