Local Police and Homeland Security

After the September 11 terrorist attacks, a new role as first responders to terrorist incidents and primary gatherers of intelligence has emerged for local police departments of U.S.A. This article provides some baseline data that describe the local police's conditions on agencies and personnel, contacts with the public, data collection and information sharing, the application of video technology and digital imaging before September11. The article expects to see more widespread use of computers for data collection and information sharing, more personne1 working in specialized intelligence capacities as well as the creation of antiterrorism units and inter - agency task forces.
