Narrative Discourse in the English Writings of Chinese Authors

This paper presents a contrastive study on narrative discourse in English compositions by Chinese students and by Native Speakers of English （ NSE ）. Data include professional writings from foreign publications as well as compositions by Chinese students. The numbers of events and narrative chains in the data were calculated in relation to the lengths of sample compositions. It is found that English writings of Chinese students are more narrative than their counterparts because of the transfer of patterns of thought which govern L1 writing strategies of Chinese students.
