RURAL POLICY PROBLEMS: AN ILL-ATTENDED FIELD

BROWNE, Professor of Political Science, Central Michigan University, is author of Politics, Programs and Bureaucrats as well as over 20 published articles, chapters, and monographs related to public policy and interest group politics. He previously coedited a Policy Studies Journal symposium focusing on agriculture policy and two related books, The New Politics of Food and The Role of U.S. Agriculture in Fore Poky.;DON F. HADWIGER, Professor of Political Science, Iowa State University, has authored, co-authored, or coedited five books on agriculture policy and politics as well as a Policy Studies Journal symposium on agriculture policy. In addition to writing over a dozen articles on rural policy and agriculture, he has also worked with both USDA and congressional agriculture committes.
Abstract:The editors call for rural research and policy attention. Past research efforts, while laudatory, have been fragmented and have not directed broad attention to rural problems. Public policies have lacked both support and continuity. Present conditions, in terms of population trends and economics, mean an increasing need to focus on the national importance of rural areas.
