Abstract:The empirical literature concerning the developmental consequences of postdivorce custody arrangements for children age 5 and younger is summarized with a focus on implications for practitioners and researchers. A developmental-ecological model is used to organize the review. Key variables include socioeconomic resources, mother-child relationship, father-child relationship, mothers' and fathers' adjustment, cooperation and conflict within the parental alliance, the extended family network, and the day care environment.
