The imprisonment of citizens who are yet to be convicted or are awaiting sentence is a matter of philosophical and pratical importance.The research identified that in a state with a low remand rate,bail support projects were well resourced and had a high profile among key decision-makers.This suggests that an investment in community-based corrections at the pre-trial and sentencing stages of the justice system can reduce the financial and social costs of imprisonment.However,while community-based corrections programs have the capacity to enhance the effectiveness of the criminal justice system,political factors such as the popularity of "tough on crime" discourse will limit the adoption of community-based correction options in many Australian jurisdictions.
