Barbour Scholarship and Contemporary Chinese Women''''s Education in the America: Means, Specialization and Significance

This paper discusses Barbour Scholarship's philosophy,its establishment,its mode of operation and its influence on contem- porary Chinese women to go to the America for education.In 1918 the University of Michigan established the Barbour Scholarship which was the first important one targeting Asian women.Its goal was to encourage the improvement of women's status and educate women of Asian origin with western thinking and promote understanding between the east and the west.The Barbour Scholarship not only became an important channel for Chinese women to go to the America but also made it possible for many outstanding women to grow as models of"saving the nation and the people."Over the century of history of the Barbour Scholarship,it has become a symbol for a focus on women's and minorities' issues in the America's higher education and is a model for consideration of adoption in the Chi- nese higher education.
