Being the capital of Jiangsu Province, Nanjing has become an important economic centre in China with heavy chemical industry as the principal sector. The city's production capacity in electronics and chemicals ranks second in China, with car manufacturing in third place, while industries like machine building, household appliances and building materials are also significant.
