Affiliation:Sheila Wellstone has dedicateda goodportion of her life to helping women and children who are victims of domestic violence. She has traveled throughout the nation. talking and listening to people, and she uses this information to try to influence public policy.;Senator Paul Wellstone graduated with a B.A. in political science from the University of North Carolinaat Chapel Hill in 1965. Four years later, he earned a Ph.D. After teaching at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. for 21 years, Senator Wellstone put together a grassroots campaign thnt earned the respect and support of many Minnesotans. In 1990, he was elected as a heavy underdog. Among his achievements as a semto);Wellstone aided the enactment of legislation that allowed people to take time off from work to care for sick children without losing their jobs, supported a bill protecting seniors from corporate raids of their pensionfun, and now has taken great strides in promoting children's rights. Together, the Wellstones have three children and six grandchildren.
Abstract:The millennium Association of Family and Conciliation Courts conference, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, brought about the third annual Meyer Elkin Address. Following Jonah, Peter, and Marian Wright Edelman in 1998 and George Thomson in 1999, the organization was honored to have Senator Paul Wellstone and Sheila Wellstone discuss important issues involving domestic violence and other family and children's issues. Both Senator Wellstone and Wellstone are nationally recognized leaders in the area of domestic violence advocacy. They are sincere and diligent in their efforts to protect and promote families and children. It was a privilege to listen to the following address.
