Abstract:Thirty-two fatally injured road traffic accident victims with posterior neck injuries were examined specifically for vertebral artery trauma using detailed post-mortem techniques. Such injuries were found in 10 cases (31%), half of which were in pedestrians. From the author's study, the possible role that such injuries may have played in morbidity or mortality could not be assessed in isolation. Nevertheless, the high incidence found, together with supporting clinical evidence from other case studies, indicates that the risk of such injuries occurring in suspected neck injury cases is high, and furthermore, may lead to considerable morbidity if initially unrecognised.
