Risks, Benefits, and Conflicts of Interest in Human Research: Ethical Evolution in the Changing World of Science

Affiliation:First director of the newly created federal Office of Human Research Protections. Formerly, he was the Director of Human Research Affairs at Partners Healthcare System in Boston and Associate Professor of Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He received his A.B. from Harvard College, his Ph.D. from Harvard University, and his M.D. from Harvard Medical School. He was a Pharmacology Research Associate at the National Institutes of Health before returning to join the MGH Department of Anesthesia, where, among other things, he served as Director of the Department's Henry K. Beecher Memorial Research Laboratories. He has been both an IRB chair and a research subject.
