The Ci Poetry of Su Dongbo and Xin Qiji: A Comparative Study

Su Shi and Xin Qiji, of the Song Dynasty, were major representatives of the 'haofang school" ci writers, however, they differed significantly in their idiosyncrasies of style. The ci poetry of Su Dongbo expressed his attempt to free himself spiritually from the agonies arising from disappointment at the reality, his desire to leap across the abyss of darkness to greet the aurora of Ideal. Xin Qiji's poetry, on the other hand, manifested his bitter resentment and hatred of the society, letting out a furious outcry of indignation and exhibiting a flaming passion. In sum, Su showed a largess of mind while Xin was sadly indignant.
