Start of NPC Anti-Secession Law Legislative Procedure

AFTER serious consideration and full discussion, the Standing Committee of the 10th National People's Congress decided on December 25, 2004 to go ahead with the legislative procedure to enact an anti-secession law, thus providing legal support for China's efforts to safeguard its territorial integrity and prevent separatist activities. Such a law is common; clauses to protect national unity can be found in many countries' constitutions, including Canada, Russia and the United Kingdom.
