Abstract: | In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, federal, state, and local agencies have begun to rebuild the City of New York. This article explores the various environmental impacts caused by Hurricane Sandy and government response. But beyond immediate hazard mitigation, government agencies have begun to consider the incorporation of hard and soft infrastructure to mitigate storm surge generated by future storms. This article suggests that while soft infrastructure would produce the smallest environmental impact, compared to other proposals, its integration into the city's ecosystem must be done prudently, especially in the borough of Staten Island. |
