The Poliheuristic Theory in Foreign Policy Analysis

The study of foreign policy is an important part in the field of international relations. Since 1950s, a number of theoretical approaches have emerged in the realm of foreign policy studies. The poliheuristic theory is one of them. It arose in early 1990s and has recently become one of the very popular theories in foreign policy studies in the Western world. It tries to combine the advantages of both the rational choice theory and the cognitive theory, absorbing them in the same analysis framework to analyze the foreign policy of a state. This article introduces the development of the poliheuristic theory in recent years, attempting to clarify the core issue it tries to solve, as well as its main contents and analysis framework. Finally the paper also offers some comments of its authors on this theory.
