Abstract: | Jewish stereotypes in English fiction and drama changed markedly during the nineteenth century. Negative images grounded in religious prejudice were superseded by images based on the notion of Jews as a racial hazard. In marriages between Jew and non‐Jew, the Jew was seen as a polluting element. |
