Rousseau''''s "Moment" and" Civil Religion"

This paper attempts to discuss the significance of "civil religion" on the theory of the Social Contract by Rousseau.It has been recognized that "general will" is generated at the moment when the natural state is transformed into the civil society.However,scholars tend to overemphasize on the importance of "contract opinion" when analyze the nature and the formation of general will.This paper argues,based on further exploration of the context of the Social Contract,that it is the legislator and civil religion that contribute basically and essentially to the theory of the Social Contract more than the "contract opinion".This paper also compares the conceptions of the legislator and civil religion between Rousseau's and that of the ancient.
