CONSUMER PROTECTION PROGRAMS IN FOOD COOPERATIVES

Institution:ROBERT SOMMER is director of the Center for Consumer Research and professor of pyschology at the University of California, Davis. His most recent books are Farmers' Markets of America (Capra, 1980) and A Practical Guide to Behavioral Research (Oxford, 1980) written with Barbara B. Sommer.;CARLA FJELD is working for her Ph.D. in Nutritional Biology at the University of Chicago Medical School. She is author of several articles on consumer cooperatives and nturition education.
Abstract:Food cooperatives have played a vanguard role in consumer protection through (a) information and education, (b) selective merchandising and boycotts, and (c) political lobbying. While education and selective merchandising benefit primarily their own membership, the political efforts have benefited all consumers.
