PROFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVES ON COURT-CONNECTED CHILD CUSTODY MEDIATION

Affiliation:Elizabeth J. Koopman is an Associate Professor in the Education Division, University of Maine at Machias. She has published numerous articles and book chapters in the areas of divorce and family mediation and court-connected mediation services and has made many presentations in these areas at national and international conferences. She has also chaired the Divorce Mediation Task Force for the American Orthopsychiatric Association.;E. Joan Hunt is a member of the faculty of the Department ofHuman Development at the University of Maryland at College Park. She has coauthored articles and book chapters and made presentations at national conferences in the areas of divorce and family mediation and court-connected services.;Francine G. Favretto is director of the Telephone Mediation Service for (he Prince George's County Office of Child Support Enforcement. She has coauthored a book chapter and madepresentations at national conferences in the area ofdivorce andfamily mediation.;Laurie S. Coltri was formerly Director ofthe Telephone Mediation Service for the Prince George's County Office of ChiM Support Enforcement. She has coauthored a book chapter and made presentations at national conferences in the area ofdivorce and family mediation. She is currently a doctoral candidate in the Department of Human Development at the University of Maryland at College Park.;Tracey Britten is a doctoral candidate in the Department ofHuman Development at the University of MaTland at College Park.
Abstract:This article presents the initial findings of a research project in five judicial settings where there is the provision of child custody mediation within the court. A sample of judges, members of the Bar, and court mediators completed the Professional Study Questionnaire, which examined opinions regarding the efficacy of child custody mediation and requested suggestions for judicial policy and procedure in cases of custody conflicts.
