A STUDY OF THE ECTOCRANIAL AND ENDOCRANIAL SUTURE CLOSURE FOR THE AGE ESTIMATION

The author have observed 140 skulls of Mongolian corpses in Shanghai area, whose age vary from 16 to 92 years-old, among whom there are 63 males and 77 females, and have found that the complete union of the ectocoronal suture ectosagittal suture and ectolambdoid suture occurred earliest at 54, 27 and 73 yearsold respectively, which the latest time of imcomplete union occurred at 92, 84 and at 92 years-old individually. The endocotonal suture endosagittal suture and endolambdoid suture united earliest at 20, 20 and at 20 years-old respectively, which incomplete union of all three suture occurred latest at 78 yearsold. The rates of different degree of union of bilateral ectocoronal, endocoronal,ectolambdoid, and endolambdoid sutures were 34.28%,12.14%,14.28%,and 5.71% respectively. After processing the data from the study, the main factors which influence the cranial suture closure are the length of the body, the right third part of the ectocoronal suture, the left third part of the endocoronal suture, the second part of the endosagittal suture, the left first and third parts of ectolambdoid suture,when F value is 4. After the data was subjected to regression analysis, the regression equation (R=0.7381) used for estimating the age. The use of regression equation permits 75.71% of the estimation being within 14 years-old of the actual age. The rate of the difference between the estimating age and the actual age within 14 years-old was 75.71% by using the regression epuation
