This longitudinal study investigated the importance of parental monitoring to the deterrence of adolescent problem behavior
by examining bidirectional associations among perceived parental monitoring, adolescent disclosure and problem behaviors across
the high school years. Adolescents (N = 2,941; 50.3% female) were surveyed each year from grades 9 through 12. There was a reciprocal association between problem
behavior and parental knowledge, such that higher parental knowledge predicted reduced problem behavior over time and higher
problem behavior in turn predicted lower parental knowledge. It was adolescent disclosure that predicted parental knowledge,
however, rather than parental monitoring behaviors. Parental control was a direct deterrent of problem behavior over time,
and time spent engaged in family fun activities demonstrated indirect links to problem behavior, particularly through parental
control and adolescent disclosure. Importantly, these effects were invariant across grade. Overall, these findings suggest
a “family-centered process”, rather than primarily a youth-driven or parent-driven process, in the prediction of problem behavior. 相似文献

Research indicates that parents’ solicitation and adolescents’ disclosure of information are negatively associated with adjustment problems (depressive symptoms and conduct problems). However, few studies examine the bidirectional associations between these variables with early adolescents in the United States or the race/ethnic group differences in these bidirectional associations. We examined cross-lagged associations and race/ethnic group differences between parents’ solicitation, adolescents’ disclosure and adjustment problems among 209 non-Hispanic White (61.2%) and Hispanic (38.8%) early adolescents (67.5% female) across a 1-year period. The findings indicated that adolescents’ disclosure was negatively associated with subsequent depressive symptoms, while parents’ solicitation was positively associated with subsequent depressive symptoms. No significant race/ethnic group differences were indicated. Family-based interventions should encourage adolescents to disclose information to parent(s) due to its promotive capabilities. 相似文献

Studies using valid measures of monitoring activities have not found the anticipated main effects linking greater monitoring
activity with fewer behavioral problems. This study focused on two contexts in which monitoring activities may be particularly
influential. Early adolescents (n = 218, M age = 11.5 years, 51% female, 49% European American, 47% African American) reported their unsupervised time, beliefs about
the legitimacy of their parents’ authority, and their own involvement in antisocial behavior. Mothers and adolescents reported
their perceptions of adolescent disclosure and parental solicitation and control. Adolescents’ perceptions of greater parental
solicitation at age 11 were associated with less antisocial behavior at age 12 (when controlling for age 11 antisocial behavior)
among adolescents reporting large amounts of unsupervised time and weak legitimacy beliefs. Perceived parental solicitation
may be an effective deterrent of antisocial behavior when adolescents spend a lot of time unsupervised and for adolescents
who are likely to challenge the legitimacy of their parents’ authority. 相似文献

Building on the growing body of research that supports the relationship between depressive symptoms and sexual activities
in adolescence, we examined how individual differences in interpersonal avoidance and anxiety might moderate this association.
Data were collected from 71 early adolescent girls (M age 13.45 years; SD = 0.68; 89% Caucasian) concurrently and 1 year later. Results indicated that greater depressive symptoms
predicted a greater frequency of sexual intercourse both concurrently and 1-year later, particularly among more interpersonally
avoidant girls. However, greater depressive symptoms predicted a greater frequency of non-intercourse activities 1-year later
among less avoidant girls. Implications for understanding how individual differences in interpersonal style may serve as risk
or protective factors in dysphoric girls’ sexual experiences are discussed. 相似文献

This study examined the associations between adolescent mothers’ postpartum depressive symptoms and their perceptions of amount
of father care giving and satisfaction with father involvement with the baby. The sample included 100 adolescent mothers (ages
13–19; mainly African-American and Latina) whose partners were recruited for a randomized study for fathers only. Controlling
for prenatal depressive symptoms and other prenatal and postpartum variables, we found that higher levels of mothers’ satisfaction
with father involvement rather than perception of amount of fathers’ care giving was significantly associated with fewer postpartum
depressive symptoms. The relationship between satisfaction with father involvement and depressive symptoms was partially mediated
by mothers’ sense of parenting competence and not by mothers’ parenting stress. Policy and programs should place greater emphasis
on early support for adolescent mothers and their partners, particularly when mothers desire the involvement of the father

This study examined (a) the associations between school connectedness and early adolescent adjustment problems over a 1 year
period and (b) the equivalence of these associations across gender. Five hundred middle school students (53.4% female), initially
in the 6th and 7th grades, participated in the two-wave study. Results from two-group cross-lagged panel analyses were consistent
across boys’ and girls’ data. After controlling for baseline levels of adjustment problems, school connectedness predicted
lower levels of early adolescent conduct problems 1 year later. Regarding the opposite direction of associations, and even
after baseline levels of school connectedness were taken into account, conduct problems predicted lower levels of subsequent
school connectedness. There were no cross-lagged associations between depressive symptoms and school connectedness, although
elevated levels of baseline depressive symptoms predicted higher levels of subsequent conduct problems. Findings elaborate
previous research by demonstrating that early adolescents actively shape the middle school environment.

There is a long tradition of studying parent–child relationships and adolescent delinquency. However, the association between
parent–child relationships and criminal offending during young adulthood is less well understood. Although the developmental
tasks of young adulthood tend to focus on intimate relationships, employment, and family formation, the parent–child bond
persists over the life course and likely continues to inform and shape behavior beyond adolescence. Using data from the Toledo
Adolescent Relationships Study (TARS), the influence of parental involvement on patterns of offending among respondents interviewed
first as adolescents (mean age of 15 years), and later as young adults (mean age of 20 years), is examined. The TARS sample
used for our study (N = 1,007) is demographically diverse (49.5% female; 25.3% Black; 7.2% Hispanic) and includes youth beyond those enrolled in
college. The influences of both early and later parenting factors such as support, monitoring and conflict on young adults’
criminal behavior are examined. Results show that early monitoring and ongoing parental support are associated with lower
offending in young adulthood. These effects persist net of peer influence and adolescent delinquency. This suggests the importance
of examining multiple ways in which parental resources and support influence early adult behavior and well-being. 相似文献

This study examined the links between parental divorce, quality of maternal parenting, spousal relationships and middle adolescent
romantic competence in 80 mother-adolescent daughter pairs (40 divorced). Mothers were asked to describe their attitudes and
behaviors with regard to their daughters’ romantic behavior. In addition, mothers were interviewed about their own romantic
experiences when they were at the age of their daughters. Adolescent girls (mean age = 16.98 years; range 16–18) were administered
a comprehensive interview about romantic competence. Findings indicated that adolescent girls from divorced families showed
lower levels of romantic competence, which were expressed in their behavior, attitudes toward relationships and skill in handling
those relationships. Divorce was found to have had an adverse effect on girls’ romantic competence, whereas continued adaptive
parenting and spousal relationships alleviated the effect of divorce. Mothers’ coherent representation of their own adolescent
romantic experiences also alleviated the effect of divorce on daughters’ romantic behavior. Results show the important role
of family relationships in fostering romantic competence among adolescent girls. 相似文献

This article reports on a longitudinal study investigating gender differences in the association between maternal disclosure
and adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Little research has examined the relationship of parental disclosure to adolescents’
depressive symptoms and research on sex differences is particularly lacking. In a sample of 428 families with a mean age of
13.36 (52% female) of the target adolescents, maternal and children’s disclosure and depressive symptoms were assessed twice
with an interval of 4 years. Controlling for the quality of the parent–child relationship and levels of maternal depressive
symptoms, the analyses revealed an interaction effect for child’s gender, moderating the effect of maternal disclosure on
adolescents’ depressive symptoms. Higher levels of maternal disclosure were accompanied by lower levels of depressive symptoms
in girls and higher levels of depressive symptoms in boys. Gender differences in socialization, communication, individuation
and social networks might explain why daughters and sons are differently affected by maternal disclosure. 相似文献

Given that parenting practices have been linked to suicidal behavior in adolescence, examining the moderating effect of parenting
styles on suicidal behavior early in development could offer potential insight into possible buffers as well as directions
for suicide prevention and intervention later in adolescence. Hence, the moderating effects of parenting styles, including
authoritarian, permissive, and features of authoritative parenting, on depressed and aggressive children’s suicidal behavior,
including ideation and attempts, were evaluated with young children (N = 172; 72% male, 28% female) ranging from 6 to 12 years of age. African American (69%) and Caucasian (31%) children admitted
for acute psychiatric inpatient care completed standardized measures of suicidal behavior, depressive symptoms, and proactive
and reaction aggression. Their parents also completed standardized measures of parental distress and parenting style. Hierarchical
regression analyses revealed that, while statistically controlling for age and gender, children who endorsed more depressive
symptoms or reactive aggression reported more current and past suicidal behavior than children who endorsed fewer depressive
or aggressive symptoms. The significant positive relationship observed between depressive symptoms and childhood suicidal
behavior, however, was attenuated by parental use of authoritarian parenting practices for African-American and older children
but not for younger and Caucasian children. The ethnic/racial difference observed for the buffering effect of authoritarian
parenting practices offers potential theoretical and clinical implications for conceptualizing the moderating effects of parenting
styles on African-American and Caucasian children’s suicidal behavior. 相似文献

This study examined the relationship among pubertal timing, parental control, and problem behaviors. There were 267 participants,
whose ages ranged from 9 to 16 years. Both maternal and paternal psychological control predicted problem behaviors over and
above the effects of behavioral control. For boys, early maturation and high levels of paternal psychological control, whereas
for girls, on-time maturation and low levels of paternal psychological control were associated with low levels of internalizing
problem behaviors. Early maturation and high levels of maternal psychological control predicted high levels of externalizing
problem behaviors. The implications of these findings were discussed in terms of the detrimental effects of psychological
control on adolescent wellbeing, the role that pubertal timing may or may not play during this period, and finally the need
to separately examine fathers’ parenting and mothers’ parenting while investigating the impact of parental control on adolescent
problem behaviors.

A looking glass self-orientation refers to the tendency to incorporate the opinions of social partners to form a self-representation
and approve of one’s self. These orientations were assessed for two adolescent siblings in 438 families with surveys accessed
on-line. Younger (M = 11.6 years, SD = 1.8) and older (M = 14.3, SD = 2.1) siblings and their mothers (82.7% European-American) participated. The siblings shared similar orientations in relying
on either classmates or the other sibling for approval, prior to self approval. Relying on classmate approval was significantly
associated with adjustment and academic performance as reported by both the self and mothers. Siblings were also identified
as sources of approval with implications for adjustment, but the magnitude of the associations with adjustment were lower.
Comparisons of the older and younger siblings revealed that both groups were equally as liable to poor outcomes when reflecting
the opinions of classmates or siblings. The results of SEM analyses implicate parenting characterized as coercive, rejecting,
and chaotic in association with the tendency to rely on others for approval. A mediating role for looking glass self-orientations
in associations between parenting and depressive symptoms, anxiety or academic performance was also found.

Theories and prior research have outlined a constellation of adolescent risk behaviors that tend to co-occur, reflecting a
general pattern. Although their generality has largely been supported, there is some question about how to best study and
portray the relationship among these behaviors. This study used data from a survey administered to high school youth (n = 2549, 38 schools). The general population sample comprised an even split between boys and girls, averaged roughly 16 years
of age, and was 59% White and 10% Hispanic/Latino. Using latent class analysis, four subgroups, comprised of varying types
and degrees of risky behavior, were identified. Specifically, there were two groups that “abstained” and “experimented” with
risky behaviors and two others that had higher, but somewhat distinct, patterns of such activities. These groups were then
examined in relation to youth characteristics (e.g., mental and physical health, school performance) and socio-environmental
factors (e.g., social support, parental monitoring) that may be useful for better understanding “problem behavior syndrome”

Protective and risk factors associated with rates of early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors for a sample of low-income
adolescent boys were examined using bioecological theory framed by a resiliency perspective. Protective processes examined
include a close mother–son and father–son relationship, parental monitoring and family routines, as well as the adolescent
boy’s academic achievement, expectations, and school recognition. The risk factors assessed were delinquent behaviors, if
the adolescent was born to a teenage mother, family structure, monthly family income, risky neighborhood environments, family
of origin welfare receipt, and maternal education. Waves one (1999) and two (2001) of Welfare, Children, and Families: A Three-City Study were used (N = 528; Wave 1 ages 10–14 years). Associations between early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors with individual, family,
school, and neighborhood protective and risk factors were addressed through a series of d-probit and Ordinary Least Squares
multiple regression techniques. When protective and risk factors were addressed independently, academic achievement and parental
monitoring protected adolescent boys from early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors while drug and alcohol use and school
problems placed them at risk for these behaviors. However, when the model is assessed together, early parental monitoring
and academic achievement were shown to protect boys’ early sexual debut and risky sexual behaviors by reducing their delinquent
behaviors, specifically early drug and alcohol use and school problems.

This longitudinal study examined whether supportive parenting mediates relations between parent–child differences in cultural
orientation (generational dissonance) and depressive symptoms with a sample of 451 first and second generation Chinese American
parents and adolescents (12–15 years old at time 1). Using a person-centered approach, meaningful typologies of cultural orientation
were derived for fathers, mothers, and adolescents. Overall, results provided support, though qualified, for the notion that
generational dissonance is linked to depressive symptoms through decreased supportive parenting. In general, having a parent
with a bicultural profile seemed to be most advantageous if adolescents similarly had a bicultural profile, whereas more American oriented adolescents with more Chinese oriented parents reported the least supportive parenting and most depressive symptoms. Directions for future research and
the benefits of using a person-centered approach in research of acculturation and generational dissonance are discussed.

Prevalence differences in depressive symptoms between the sexes typically emerge in adolescence, with symptoms more prevalent
among girls. Some evidence suggests that variation in onset and progression of puberty might contribute to these differences.
This study used a genetically informative, longitudinal (assessed at ages 12, 14, and 17) sample of Finnish adolescent twins
(N = 1214, 51.6% female) to test whether etiological influences on depressive symptoms differ as a function of pubertal status.
These tests were conducted separately by sex, and explored longitudinal relationships. Results indicated that pubertal development
moderates environmental influences on depressive symptoms. These factors are more important on age 14 depressive symptoms
among more developed girls relative to their less developed peers, but decrease in influence on age 17 depressive symptoms.
The same effects are observed in boys, but are delayed, paralleling the delay in pubertal development in boys compared to
girls. Thus, the importance of environmental influences on depressive symptoms during adolescence changes as a function of
pubertal development, and the timing of this effect differs across the sexes. 相似文献

Parents and adolescents often have discrepant views of parenting which pose challenges for researchers regarding how to deal with information from multiple informants. Although recent studies indicate that parent–adolescent discrepancies in reports of parenting can be useful in predicting adolescent outcomes, their findings are mixed regarding whether discrepancies relate to more positive or more negative adolescent outcomes. This study examined the longitudinal implications of parent–adolescent discrepancies in reports of parenting (warmth, monitoring, and reasoning) on adolescent behavioral, psychological, academic, and physical health outcomes among Mexican immigrant families in the United States. Participants were 604 adolescents (54% female, M age.wave1?=?12.41 years) and their parents. Taking a person-centered approach, this study identified distinct patterns of parent–adolescent discrepancies in parenting and their different associations with later adolescent outcomes. Adolescents’ more negative perceptions of parenting relative to parents were associated with more negative adolescent outcomes, whereas adolescents’ more positive perceptions relative to parents related to more positive adolescent outcomes. There were also variations in discrepancy patterns and their associations with adolescent outcomes between mother–adolescent vs. father-adolescent dyads. Findings of the current study highlight individual variations of discrepancies among parent–adolescent dyads and the importance of considering both the magnitude and direction of discrepancies regarding their associations with adolescent well-being. 相似文献

Previous studies have indicated homophily in depressive symptoms among adolescent friends, resulting from both peer selection
and socialization processes. However, developmental differences and the role of school transitions in these processes have
not been elucidated. A sample of 367 (51% female) adolescents was followed from 6th to 11th grade to investigate prospective
relationships between adolescents’ and their friends’ depressive symptoms in middle school and in high school. Results revealed
that students selected friends with similar levels of depressive symptoms after each school transition. Additionally, friends
appeared to socialize adolescents to become more similar in depressive affect in late middle school years. These findings
suggest normative selection effects after school transitions, followed by socialization effects in middle school, but not

Earlier research has associated early puberty with emotional and behavioral symptoms particularly among girls, while among
boys, findings have been contradictory as to whether risks are associated with early or late pubertal timing. We studied the
association between pubertal timing and substance use behaviors in middle adolescence in a 2-year follow up study of 2,070
(mean age 15.5 years, SD 0.36; 56.4% females) Finnish adolescents. Pubertal timing was measured by age at menarche/oigarche.
Eleven years or less was classified as early, 12–13 years as normative and 14 years or later as late pubertal timing. Substance
use behaviors were elicited by a number of questions related to alcohol use patterns, smoking and cannabis use. As factors
that could explain the association between pubertal timing and substance use, we studied depressive symptoms, delinquency
and aggression, and parental monitoring. In boys, all these substance use behaviors were the more common the earlier the puberty
and the associations persisted at age 17. Among girls, early pubertal timing was similarly associated with substance use behaviors
at age 15, but no longer at age 17. The associations between pubertal timing and substance use behaviors persisted when symptom
dimensions and parental monitoring were added into the models. Early puberty is a risk factor for substance use particularly
among boys. Among girls, the impact of pubertal timing already tempers off during adolescence. 相似文献

Mexican-origin adolescent mothers are at increased risk for poor psychosocial functioning as a result of various stressors
with which they must contend; however, existing theory suggests that cultural strengths may help mitigate the negative effects
of stress. As such, the current study examined the associations between cultural and economic stressors and Mexican-origin
adolescent mothers’ (N = 207; M age = 16.23 years, SD = 1.0) internalizing and externalizing behaviors, as well as the degree to which ethnic identity affirmation
and familism values moderated these links. Adolescent mothers who reported higher levels of discrimination, acculturative
stress, and economic stress also reported higher depressive symptoms and greater involvement in risky behaviors. Importantly,
ethnic identity affirmation minimized the negative associations between cultural stressors and adolescents’ involvement in
risky behaviors, with the associations being weakest among adolescents with high levels of ethnic identity. Familism appeared
to serve a protective function under conditions of low levels of discrimination, but not under conditions of high levels of
discrimination. Findings are discussed with special attention to the developmental and cultural contexts in which these adolescent
mothers’ lives are embedded, and implications for future research and practice are presented. 相似文献
