Another look at E. P. Thompson and British Communism, 1937–1955

Examination of E. P. Thompson’s activism in the Communist Party (CPGB) has been limited. Some historians, basing themselves on his memories and interpretations of his 1955 biography of William Morris, have portrayed him as a dissenter, at best a loyal critic of CPGB policy. Others have deduced political conformity from his fourteen years membership of a declining organisation. This article reappraises the literature and reassesses the making and unmaking of a Communist intellectual. It explores Thompson’s contemporary writings – rarely exposed to critical scrutiny – and employs recently released security files to reconstruct the historian’s ideas and activity across the post-war decade. The article concludes that in these years Thompson remained a faithful supporter of the Soviet Union, the party line and ‘high Stalinism’. Khruschev’s ‘Secret Speech’ and the Russian invasion of Hungary did not validate pre-existing dissent. They were the pivotal factors provoking a rupture with the Stalinism Thompson had championed from 1942 to 1955.     

Illusions of Relevance? An Australian Encounter with Malay History and Southeast Asian Security

A. C. Milner’s visiting inaugural at N.U.S. invites exploration of its author’s intellectual development, for he boldly claims a role for an Australian historian of Southeast Asia as a promoter of liberal governance for Southeast Asian societies, in face of militant Islamism. His earlier “postmodernist” commitment to “getting inside the Malay experience” constitutes some sort of precursor, but relativist scepticism fits as uncomfortably as does, in its own way, advocacy of Australian tolerance of Asian authoritarianism. In attacking Leifer’s Realism, the lecture seems ill-informed, while the post-war Oakeshott is scarcely relevant to the diverse societies of Southeast Asia.

堆形艾美球虫广东株3-1E基因在毕赤酵母中的表达

以重组质粒pGEM-3-1E为模板,扩增了序列两端分别含有EcoRⅠ和XbaⅠ酶切位点的堆形艾美球虫(Eimeria acervulina)广东株3-1E基因(长度为529 bp),将3-1E基因克隆至巴斯德毕赤酵母分泌型表达载体pPICZαC中,构建了酵母表达质粒pPICZαC-3-1E。转化毕赤酵母X-33得到含有3-1E基因的重组酵母,甲醇诱导产生的目的蛋白经SDS-PAGE分析和免疫印迹检测,表明毕赤酵母成功表达了3-1E基因。     

Kosovo: Statebuilding Utopia and Reality

ABSTRACT

Twenty years of international statebuilding have made little impact on the ‘stateness’ of Kosovo. This article puts this failure in the broader context of the shift from the liberal internationalist assumptions of the late 1990s to the pragmatic realism of today. It does this through the lenses of E H Carr’s classic work The Twenty Years’ Crisis, UN policy thinking on the problematic assumptions of international statebuilding and the diagnoses in David Lake’s 2016 book The Statebuilder’s Dilemma, which sets out three pragmatic alternatives. The article concludes that all three of these alternatives can be seen in practice in Kosovo.

新疆部分地区动物西尼罗病毒感染的调查

为了解新疆部分地区动物西尼罗病毒(WNV)的流行状况,采用一步法实时定量逆转录聚合酶链反应(real-time RT-PCR)对采自新疆伊犁河谷地区以及巴音布鲁克草原的200份马血样、100份驴血样和100份犬血样外周血单核细胞中的WNV包膜蛋白(E)基因片段进行了检测。结果显示,被检血样中未发现WNV E基因片段,目前尚没有证据表明我国新疆部分地区的动物中存在WNV感染。提示,近期内该地区出现WNV流行的可能性小。

载脂蛋白E(apolipoprote in E,apo E)在脑损伤愈后过程中起着重要的作用,在损伤后不同时段,apo E含量及出现部位均呈现一定的波动性,而这些问题对探讨脑损伤的治疗及在法医学中推断脑损伤时间有十分重要的意义。本文现就这些问题的相关研究作一概述。

大鼠实验性脑挫伤后不同时间脑apoE的表达

目的观察大鼠实验性脑挫伤后脑内apoE蛋白变化的时空性规律。方法采用自由落体撞击法致大鼠脑挫伤模型,观察伤后不同时间(0.5h、2h、6h、12h、24h、3d、7d、14d)apoE蛋白的变化,并用计算机图像分析技术作定量统计分析。结果伤后0.5h组脑皮质神经元apoE出现阳性表达,3d达到高峰,随后下降;伤后0.5h组在海马出现apoE强阳性反应,CA1区在伤后3d达到高峰,而CA2~CA4区在24h达到高峰,随后逐渐下降,伤后海马apoE表达以CA1区最强。结论挫伤后apoE时空性变化规律可作为脑损伤时间推断、早期诊断及生前伤和死后伤鉴别的一个新的参考指标。
