Grenada: the Path to Revolution

At dawn on 13 March 1979, people living near the army barracks in the valley of True Blue near St. George's, capital of the young state of Grenada, were awakened by gunfire. A detachment of 47 rebels was attacking the barracks where approximately 300 soldiers were housed, and, taking advantage of the panic, seized the guns and ammunition stored there. The soldiers fled. It was 4 a.m., and an hour later the rebels took over the radio station. They appealed over the radio to the populace to take up arms and support the revolution that was beginning. The police were advised to surrender without resistance. In the hours that followed, the detachments of rebels, now joined by workers and student youth, seized the prime minister's residence, telegraph installations, and other strategic objectives. In the course of the day, all police stations hung out white flags. The sagging regime collapsed. Fidel Castro called the anti-imperialist democratic revolution that had been victorious in Grenada "a big revolution in a small country."¹

Calavita's Invitation to Law & Society: Introduction to the Symposium

This essay introduces a Law & Social Inquiry symposium on Kitty Calavita's book Invitation to Law & Society: An Introduction to the Study of Real Law (2010) that features comments on the law and society enterprise by Jeannine Bell, Austin Sarat, and Christopher Tomlins. It briefly discusses the commentators' views of this enterprise as revealed in their essays and challenges points made by each of them. It goes on to discuss the book's suitability as a student‐oriented introduction to the field of law and society, filling a gap the commentators left open.

From Rogers to Rivers: the rights of the mentally ill to refuse medication

Many individuals with mental illness wish to avoid psychotropic drugs, a type of treatment that may relieve their symptoms only at the risk of unpleasant, even permanent, side effects. In marked contrast to the widely-held view that most patients may refuse any treatment and that even patients with mental illness may reject other psychoactive interventions such as electroconvulsive therapy and psychosurgery, the courts and legislatures have been slow to recognize any right to refuse psychotropic drugs. This Article demonstrates that many of the justifications offered for forcing patients to take unwanted medications are inadequate and that unless treatment refusals are reviewed outside mental institutions, patients' rights will rarely receive appropriate deference. The author analyzes the federal and state litigation to determine whether the courts have fashioned meaningful relief for the mentally ill. The Article concludes that two recent United States Supreme Court decisions have made it impossible for the federal courts to provide adequate protection. By contrast, several state courts have responded to the needs and rights of patients with mental illness.
