"五·四"处于从传统向现代转型的高潮时期。"五·四"背景下西方自由主义在中国的流转情况,"五·四"知识分子是在何种程度上领会自由主义,有无中国式的创造转化等问题都是耐人寻思的;从"五·四"知识分子对自由主义的不同侧重与选择,可以洞察到"五·四"文学由反传统文学、建立人的文学急促向阶级文学、革命文学流变的内在原因;从而对自由主义在"五·四"文学中所扮演的角色又多了一份理解与同情。     

The Man Who Fed The World

When the haearse left Xiangya Hospital in , Changsha Hunan Province, on May 22, it was the setting of an unusual scene. A large crowd stood outside the hospital to say farewell to the man in it and they began to cry out, "Grandpa Yuan, rest in peace!" Yuan Longping, known as the father of hybrid rice in China, died of organ failure on May 22 at the age of 91. But the legacy he left behind will continue to improve food security and research around the world and inspire generations of agro-scientists. His research helped feed 1.4 billion Chinese, nearly one fifth of the world's population, by growing high-yield hybrid rice though China has less than 9 percent of the arable land in the world.

文章以五四时期新女性张嗣婧的悲剧命运为例,通过对时代话语的解读,建筑张嗣婧之死所隐含的深刻的社会性别制度根源。由于女性解放运动被国家民族意识所冲谈,使得五四时期女权运动的发展受到某种限制,社会性别制度的变化也是有限的。然而张嗣婧的死所引起的广泛的思考,对于传统社会性别制度的改变起到重要的作用。     

Perceptions of Injustice in the Chinese Countryside

Concepts associated with theories of relative deprivation and distributive injustice are used to examine beliefs about overprivilege and underprivilege in the Chinese countryside. The data consist of interviews conducted with a probability sample of villagers residing in four counties. Open-ended questions were used to ascertain the magnitude and nature of felt injustices. Local officials are widely seen as unfairly advantaged and common people as widely disadvantaged, results that depart from those observed in western studies. The presence of personal problems and contextual features influence beliefs about local injustice. Even after controlling for other powerful predictors, perceptions of injustice continue to have a positive impact on local political activity. These results are interpreted in terms of the spheres and standards of justice and the relationship between distributive and procedural justice.

Endorsing the Exodus: how local leaders backed peasant migrations in 1980s Sichuan

Discussions of migration in contemporary China often center on the distinctive institutions, especially household registration (hukou) regulations, which continue to limit the options of rural people in cities. This paper draws attention to how another part of the Chinese state has engaged migration: governments in communities of origin. Evidence from Sichuan in the 1980s reveals that local leaders authorized, facilitated, and even organized out-migration of villagers, at a time when Beijing gave scant indication of official approval of peasant migration. Local innovations to sanction migration built directly on the broader trend of rural cadres becoming increasingly responsive to local economic needs. The story of local government involvement in out-migration indicates that the relationship between migrants and the Chinese state has transformed fundamentally, even though formal institutions governing urban residence have changed minimally. As in other fields of social and economic life in China, authority over migration has fragmented.

现实生活中,人具有多方面的需要。人的需要即人的本性。人的需要之所以能成为社会发展的内驱力,主要在于人有理性。然而,理性是人的福音也是人的祸因。因为正是理性使人处于一种永恒的不可避免的不平衡状态中,导致了人与自然、人与类、人与自我的深刻矛盾。这种种矛盾在现实中无从解脱,常使人去寻求另外超越的途径。这就是信仰。对于吃饱穿暖的当代人而言,信仰是其强烈的需要,如何寻找人的精神家园正成为人类最重要的课题之一。
