Parental monitoring has long been stressed as an important parenting practice in reducing adolescents’ susceptibility to depressive
symptoms. Reviews have revealed, however, that measures of monitoring have been confounded with parental knowledge, and that
the role of adolescent disclosure has been neglected. In the present study, adolescents (N = 2,941; 51.3% female) were surveyed each year from grades 9–12. To disentangle parenting factors, bidirectional associations
among parental knowledge, adolescent disclosure, and parental monitoring (i.e., solicitation and control) were examined. Higher
parental knowledge was associated with lower adolescent depressive symptoms over time. Adolescent disclosure and parental
control also predicted lower adolescent depressive symptoms indirectly through knowledge. Conversely, higher adolescent depressive
symptoms predicted lower parental knowledge, adolescent disclosure, and parental solicitation over time, highlighting the
bidirectional nature of associations among parenting factors and adolescent depressive symptoms. Importantly, these effects
were invariant across gender and grade, suggesting that interventions can be broadly based. 相似文献

In this research note we employ the work of Wiktorowicz who suggests that persons who are knowledgeable of Islam may be more capable of critically evaluating the claims of militant recruiters and ideologues and thus be more resistant to their appeals than those who are not knowledgeable. This gives rise to an interesting research question: Does knowledge of Islam reduce support for Islamist militancy? To evaluate this research question, we employ data derived from a nationally representative survey fielded among 16,279 Pakistanis in 2011. Using several survey items, we construct a “knowledge index” to measure respondents’ basic knowledge of Islam, which is our principal independent variable. To operationalize support for militancy we use two survey items that query respondents about their support for two prominent Islamist militant groups based in and from Pakistan: the Afghan Taliban as well the sectarian group, Sipah-e-Sahaba-e-Pakistan (also known as Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat). We use ordinary least squares regression to evaluate the impact of our independent variables upon support for these two groups, controlling for other relevant factors. We find that knowledge of Islam does predict less support for these two groups; however, other variables such as sectarian organization and ethnicity have greater predictive power. 相似文献

The idea that after the Nazi takeover the German political prpaganda machinestrongly supported the naming of their land the "Third Reich" (Drittes Reich) is a misperception shared by many historians, political scientists as well as lawyers all around the world even today. It is much less know that Hitler himself was never in full support of his expression even proved qiute effective both before and after NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei) tekeover. 相似文献

Performance Appraisal and Its Use for Individual and Organisational Improvement in the Civil Service of Ghana: The Case of Much Ado about Nothing? 下载免费PDF全文
Recent efforts to modernise public sector institutions have led to the adoption of performance management systems worldwide. The belief in performance management is that information generated can be used to help individuals improve themselves in terms of what they do in their organisations, which will subsequently impact positively on the organisation. An instrument for collecting performance information (PI) is performance appraisal (PA). Since the early 1990s, the Ghanaian government has attempted to develop a systematic appraisal system as a strategy to obtain PI in the civil service (CS). In spite of this, the CS continues to perform below expectations despite individuals getting promoted every year. What has been the effect of PA in the CS? How has the collected information been utilised to improve performance? What are the main barriers to the use of PI, and what practices can be put in place that might encourage the effective collection of PI and its use in the CS? We argue that the PA system is much ado about nothing. In analysing why this is so, we will look at the impediments that continue to affect the collection and usage of PI and to suggest ways that will help improve the system.
